Did you know that you could sell your clothing? I've been reselling my wardrobe for twenty years and I'm only nineteen - wink, wink! It has been the most resourceful way for me to continue to acquire new clothing for myself. What it really comes down to is that getting money out of old clothing is a game; it is a lot like working the stock market. Play the seasons right, purge four times a year, and you will win big. Don't be discouraged, though, if after your first purge you have nothing that is resalable. Once you are purging more regularly, your cast-offs will be newer and more sought after. Consignment and second-hand stores always buy for the current season. If it's winter and your recent winter purchase isn't all you thought it would be, this is the time to unload it while it's still hot and get some money back on it. This is a great way to remedy a one-time wear. It's all about you, baby! The Way to eBay The best feature of selling on eBay is that you don't have to split a percentage of your earnings, as you do with consignment and resale stores. Items to sell on eBay include: anything of value-high-end designer clothing and accessories, any item that hasn't been worn-especially shoes, anything that still has price tags on it, and hot trends of the moment. If you have the patience, you can make more money on your designer cast-offs online, as opposed to consignment store. Consignment vs. Resale Consignment stores want clothing to be in tip-top condition. This means you need to bring it in dry-cleaned and pressed. Depending on the consignment store, they will keep clothing for 90 days and send you a check on a monthly basis if you sell anything. After 90 days, first they slash the price and then if it still doesn't sell they either ask you to pick up what hasn't sold, or they will donate it to a local charity. Consignment stores are ideal for high-end clothing, as they have higher end customers, and will be able to get you a better price. If you have them in your area, immediate cash resale stores are great for selling less expensive clothing. Often, volume is more important than quality. The more you have to sell, the more you will make. You won't make as much as you can with consignment, but you get cash on the spot-immediate gratification. Also, you will be amazed at how well-stocked these stores are; this is an amazing place to find gently worn versions of your favorite trends at a fraction of the cost.
We save the most on our younger daughters clothing. At fourteen she wants all the in brands; Aeropostale, American Eagle etc, and at retail that is a pretty big chunk of change. She likes shopping resale and getting more for her money. She goes to school and brags about her savings and she is not the only one. Our last trip to Plato's Closet (resale that buys and sells) there were several other girls her age all shopping for bargins. And that does not even speak to the great things you can find at resale for your home. Someone elses castoffs may turn out to be vintage that can be resold on e-bay for a profit. Happy shopping!
